IDF Begins Massive Exercise In North

06.11.2006

*Meant to serve as a warning message to the Hizbullah in Lebanon and Syria, the IDF kicked off on Sunday a massive four-day military exercise along the northern border that will include ground forces, navy warships, and IAF fighter jets.

During the exercise, a large military presence will be felt in the Jezreel Valley, the Lower Galilee, the Golan Heights, Haifa, as well as the Ashdod and Eilat Ports.

In addition, aircraft flying at a low altitude could be seen. Sonic booms as well as explosions will be heard.

A military officer said that the exercise, in planning for over a year, was meant to demonstrate Israel's military might, and to deter the Hizbullah from launching attacks against Israel.

Three weeks ago, the Hizbullah lit up the northern border after the guerrilla group launched rocket attacks against IDF bases and communities in the north.

*A barrage of at least 10 Kassam rockets fired at Sderot, Ashkelon, and the western Negev on Sunday morning prompted the Sderot Municipality to cancel school citywide. All schools and kindergartens in the city have been shut until further notice in wake of the surge in violence over the weekend.

One Sderot resident was listed in very serious condition with shrapnel wounds and two others were lightly wounded and suffering from shock as a result of the morning's rocket fire.

A number of buildings, including a factory, sustained damage after one of the rockets landed on a building in Ashkelon's industrial zone. A Kassam also landed in a populated area south of Sderot.

Overnight Saturday, five Kassams were fired at Israel from the Gaza Strip. A total of 31 Kassam rockets were launched over the weekend.

Hamas's military wing claimed the attack, Israel Radio reported.

The terror group announced Saturday morning that it launched a Kassam rocket from the Gaza Strip into Israel, the first attack for which the organization took responsibility, since it declared a truce with Israel 16 months ago.

Following the announcement, security forces revealed they were aware of as many as 97 alerts of potential attacks against Israel. This was the largest amount of alerts that they have received in recent years.

In response Inspector General Moshe Karadi raised police alert to the second highest level. Police forces were to be dispatched on Sunday to secure the borderline between Israeli and Palestinian borders, including the Jerusalem area. Forces were also to monitor crowded areas in and around cities. Magen David Adom likewise increased its alert level.
